Music video with Paul Vernon and Josephine Stephenson

I'm so excited to be able to release my arrangement of Hildegard's O Orzchis Ecclesia and O Virga Mediatrix. It was produced for a film by Paul Vernon and sung by Josephine Stephenson:

The film was first performed at Filthy Lucre's Lingua Ignota, in March. Paul and I had worked on it over the winter of 2017-18, collaborating closely to produce the work.

​My synthesiser setting was inspired in part by the lack of information on the performance practice of Hildegard. We know little of the musical practices of her convent, but we do know that she was an extremely original thinker and musician. That gives the modern performer of her music a rich lacuna to project their own ideas into. I wanted to combine the sounds of organs and synthesisers, as is so common in electronic music, but bring that sensibility to music that was originally devotional.
