Instrumentation: 3 (II=A. Fl, III=Picc.).2 in Bb.1 in Eb.3 (III=CA*).2*.Cbsn – 4.3*.3.1 – timp – perc(2): tgl/glsp/2 Sus.cym/wdbl/2 c.bell/2 toms/TD/BD – harp* – pno – strings (14.12.10.8.6). * starred instruments are detuned.

Written for the London Symphony Orchestra through the LSO Discovery Panufnik Composers Scheme, generously supported by Lady Hamlyn and the Helen Hamlyn Trust.

First performance: 26 March 2020, LSO St. Luke's. The London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Françoix Xavier-Roth.

Programme Note
The title of this piece is taken from Wallace Stevens's poem, Peter Quince at the Clavier. A print of this hung above my piano while I composed this work; it seeped into my writing.

"Music is feeling, then, not sound; 
And thus it is that what I feel, 
Here in this room, desiring you,
